Urinary incontinence is the inability to keep urine in the bladder. This is due to loss of voluntary control to the muscles that are responsible for keeping urine in the bladder, and for passing urine. Even if urinary incontinence affects millions of people, it isn’t a normal part of aging or, in women, an inevitable consequence of childbirth or changes after menopause. It’s a medical condition with many possible causes, some relatively simple and self-limited and others more complex.

There are five kinds of urinary incontinence:

• Stress incontinence. This is due to weakening of pelvic floor muscles. “Accidents” may happen when you cough, sneeze, laugh, exercise or any other movements that add intra-abdominal pressure or pressure to the bladder, causing small amounts of urine to escape.

• Urge incontinence or Hypertonic. This is when you feel an urge to urinate for no apparent reason. The most common cause of this is involuntary and inappropriate detrusor muscle contraction. The detrusor muscle is the muscle responsible for bladder contraction when passing urine. Urge incontinence may be caused by local or surrounding infection, inflammation, or irritation of the detrusor muscle; or a defective CNS inhibitory response. Some doctors may call it as a spastic, or overactive bladder. People with urge incontinence usually feel the need to urinate even by simply hearing the sound of gushing water, touching something watery, or drinking a small amount of water.

• Functional incontinence. This occurs when the person does not recognize the urge to go to the toilet to urinate or fails to get to the toilet in time.

• Overflow incontinence or Hypotonic. This occurs when the person’s bladder is always full that it leaks urine. Weak bladder muscles or a blocked urethra may result in incomplete emptying of the bladder, causing this kind of incontinence.

• Transient incontinence. This is temporary urinary incontinence brought about my medications and certain medical conditions that may cause urinary tract obstruction.

There are many ways to treat incontinence, here are a few:

• Exercise. This requires exercising the muscles of the pelvis. Kegel exercises may help strengthen the muscles responsible for controlling urination. Strengthening or retaining pelvic floor muscle functionality may help reduce stress incontinence.

• Vaginal cone therapy. This is done with the use of a set of five vaginal cones of different weights. The patient inserts the small plastic cone inside her vagina where it is help by a mild reflex action of the pelvic flood muscles. Vaginal cone therapy is done to strengthen the appropriate muscles of the pelvic floor.

• Bladder training. This is done by taking trips to the bathroom at certain times before he or she involuntarily leaks. This helps condition the body to set a schedule for storing and emptying urine.

• Medications. Some drugs inhibit contraction of an overactive bladder. Some medications relax the bladder to completely empty it during urination. Some medications tighten the bladder muscles, preventing leackage.

• Surgery. This is suggested only in cases where other treatments have already been tried but failed to work.

There are a lot more treatments available for curing urinary incontinence. It is best to consult your doctor thoroughly as to what is the best possible means you can use to rid yourself of this problem.

Incontinence often brings with it a feeling of shame, and it may sometimes make a person to isolate himself from society in fear of being made fun of. Urinary incontinence is no laughing matter. However, you must not be afraid to seek medical help about this concern. The sooner you get over this hurdle, the sooner you can get back to a life without worrying if you’re going to make it to the toilet when you need to urinate.

While the whole world was masquerading in scary and outrageous costumes during Halloween, a team of scientists was making progress with the latest study on irrational fear. Results of this study are expected to expand current knowledge about treatments for major medical problems concerning irrational fear.

“We’re taking all of what we learned from the basic studies of animals and bringing that into the clinical practices that help people. Things are starting to come together in a very important way,” said Stephen Maren, a psychology professor from the University of Michigan.

The National Institute of Mental Health revealed that about 40 million Americans suffer from anxiety disorders. Being a basic primal emotion, fear is a key to evolutionary survival which we share in common with animals. Aside from genetics, traumatic events are closely associated with the development of overwhelming and needless fear.

Ted Abel, a fear researcher at the University of Pennsylvania considers fear to be a funny thing. “ One needs enough of it, but not too much of it,” said Abel.

According to Armi Rowe, a Connecticut freelance writer and mother, she used to be one of those rational types who are usually calm under pressure. She is not afraid to downhill ski the treacherous black diamond trails of snowy mountains. One day, however, while coping with some serious illnesses in her family, she felt fear closing in on her while she was driving alone. She thought that the stab of pain on her chest was a heart attack and called 911. Later on, it was learned that what happened was an anxiety attack.

With the help of counseling, self-study coping exercises and introspection, Rowe learned to manage such attacks early on. David Carbonell, a Chicago psychologist specializing in treating anxiety disorders, said that there’s a trick to panic attack. “You’re experiencing this powerful discomfort but you’re getting tricked into treating it like danger”, said Carbonell.

There is a possibility that by learning how fear runs through the brain and body, scientists can improve on how to dampen fear.

Amygdala, an almond-shaped part of the deep brain, is the fear hot spot. New York University psychology and neural science professor Elizabeth Phelps said that amygdala is not the one responsible for all fear response but acts like a burglar alarm that connects to everything else.

It was found that a certain chemical reaction in the amygdala is vital in the way mice and people learn to overcome fear, according to Emory University psychiatry and psychology professor Michael Davis. Mice never learn to counter their fears when that reaction is deactivated.

D-cycloserine, a drug already used to fight hard-to-treat tuberculosis, was found to strengthen that good chemical reaction in mice. When combined with therapy, it produces the same effect on people who have a fear of heights, and is now being tested in survivors of the World Trade Center attacks and the Iraq war.

Recent studies have shown that people easily recognize fear in other humans faster than other emotions. Other studies have suggested that bodily functions change just by being very afraid. One study found that very frightened people can withstand more pain than those not experiencing fear. Another found that experiencing fear or merely perceiving it in others improved people’s attention and brain skills.

According to Carbonell, since the normal response for dealing with a real threat is either to flee or fight, the best way to deal with fear when the threat is unreal is to do just the opposite: “Wait it out and chill.”

Morinda citrifolia, commonly called Noni is a native fruit that grows in Southeast Asia. Noni has been gaining popularity in Western countries because of its health benefits. This fruit is widely used as traditional medicine for many health conditions like chronic fatigue syndrome, menstrual problems, arthritis, respiratory problems, poor digestion, and many more. Noni is also rich in vitamin C and contains naturally occurring vitamins, minerals, trace elements, and enzymes. Because of the health benefits of this fruit, Noni is now available in different consumable forms such as juice, liquid concentrate, tablet, and capsule form. The juice, which is reddish brown in color, is usually mixed with other juices to make it taste better.

Through the use of pasteurization process, manufacturers ensure that the Noni juice is free of bacteria and other harmful microorganisms. This process also helps maintain or preserve the fruit extract’s beneficial properties. Noni juice is considered as one of the most potent natural drinks in the market today. Many people who regularly drink Noni juice is attest that they have already experienced improved health due to the said beverage.

Traditional health benefits of Noni fruit juice include the following:

Strengthens the heart and alleviates heart palpitations;

Fights insomnia and forgetfulness;

Helps cure sexual dysfunction in elderly individuals;

Helps improve the function of the immune system;

Has some anti-cancer properties and may prevent the development of certain cancers;

Has been successfully used to treat hepatitis-B;

Has been used successfully for weight loss;

Helps the body detox, cleans the blood and build the immune system; and

Used as a treatment for bladder infections, diabetes, colds, and constipation.

The usual dosage recommended by Noni juice manufacturers is four ounces a day to be taken at least 30 minutes before breakfast. Liquid concentrates, on the other hand, can be taken two tablespoons per day.

Several animal studies had been conducted to evaluate the beneficial effects of Noni juice. Research shows that the said natural beverage has anti-cancer, pain-relieving, and immune-system enhancing potential. None juice is believed to be potent enough to increase one’s vitality and lead to improved overall health and well-being.

Many nutrition books have, in fact, claim that Noni fruit juice is one of the most significant discoveries in the field of medicine over the last few decades. Because of the anti-aging and other health benefits of this juice it has gained popularity over other kinds of natural fruit juices.

However, it is important for consumers to ensure that they only purchase Noni fruit juice that has been thermally treated (pasteurized). The potency and health effects of mass-produced Noni fruit juice are often compromised by contamination, heat, and low-quality manufacturing conditions.

Noni fruit juice is nature’s gift for people who desire good health and long life. It is not only said to be effective for relieving pain, it also has anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic properties. Noni juice is also full of antioxidants that help cleanse the body of toxins and improves digestive health.

Try Noni fruit juice today and experience improvements in health and well-being.

By hypothyroidism, the thyroid gland is producing too less hormones to stimulate the metabolism or the body is not able to utilize the hormones. The lack of thyroid hormones slows down the metabolism and thus all the activities in the body, giving a combination of many symptoms related to slowness of bodily processes.

Hypothyroidism is common, but the frequency of the condition is not well determined. Some authorities estimate that 0.5% of the total American population have the disease to some degree. The frequency is much greater among people over 50 years of age than among young people.

THE SYMPTOMS AND COMPLICATIONS OF HYPOTHYROIDISM

The most common early symptoms are: Mental and physical fatigue, weakness, weight gain or over-weight, and depression.

One or more of these symptoms also use to appear early: Constipation, sensitivity to coldness, cold hands and feet, thick tongue, decreased sweating, dry hair, thin brittle hair, thin brittle nails, muscle and joint pain, pale or yellowish skin.

One or more of these symptoms usually appear later: Poor memory, slow thought process, drowsiness, slow speech, thinning of eyebrows, hoarseness, poor circulation, dry and flaky skin, decreased taste and smell, menstrual irregularities, skin thickening, puffy face, puffy hands and feet, swelling of extremities, overall swelling, muscle spasms, muscle atrophy, joint stiffness.

In children or young persons hypothyroidism may give developmental problems, like disturbed tooth development and short stature.

Hypothyroidism increases the risk of elevated cholesterol levels, heart disease and diabetes (diabetes mellitus). This occurs even by moderately decreased thyroid production.

THE THYROID GLAND AND ITS HORMONES

To understand the hypothyroidism, some knowledge about the thyroid gland and its hormones is essential.

The thyroid gland produces hormones that accelerate and in other wise regulate metabolism. A part of metabolism is the process of breaking down energy containing nutrients, and using the energy to produce molecules that all the processes and activities in the body use as fuel. Another part is the production of molecules that the body use as building materials.

The thyroid makes four hormones: Thyroxin (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), diiodothyronine (T2) and monoiodothyronine (T1). The hormones contain iodine, and the figures tell about the number of iodine atoms in each hormone molecule. T3 is not made directly, but is produced from T4. T3 is a more efficient hormone than T4. Therefore this conversion is important.

The pituitary, a gland under the brain, produces a hormone called thyrotropin or thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) that enhances the activity of the thyroid gland. If the body has too less thyroid hormone in the blood, the pituitary produces more thyrotropin. This makes the thyroid gland speed up its own production. By a too heavy thyroid hormone concentration, less thyrotropin is produced by the pituitary, and the thyroid gland slows down. This feed-back mechanism regulates the metabolism of the whole body.

THE MECHANISMS AND CAUSES OF HYPOTHYROIDISM

By hypothyroidism the body does not get enough thyroid hormone, or the hormones do not work effectively in the body. This causes the metabolism to slow down. When the metabolism decreases, the processes in the body do not get enough fuel and building materials, and all the body activities will therefore slow down. Energy containing nutrient will also be stored as fat, since they are not broken down.

Serious variants of hypothyroidism are called myxedema. This is a rare condition. However, less serious, but painful variants are common. There are several reasons for hypothyroidism, each giving a variant of the disease:

*An autoimmune reaction against the thyroid tissue can destroy the capability of the thyroid gland to produce hormones (for example Hashimoto’s disease).

*Sometimes the production of T3 by conversion from T4 is impaired. The total amount of hormones may be normal in these cases, but the body is still lacking T3, and gets the symptoms of hypothyroidism.

*Iodine deficiency can cause hypothyroidism, since the thyroid hormones contain iodine. In Europe and America the food is seldom short in iodine, but bad nutrition may result in iodine deficiency.

*Surgery or radiation at the thyroid area can destroy enough tissue to cause hypothyroidism.

*Injury or disease in the pituitary or of the part of the brain controlling the pituitary may cause a decrease in secreted thyrotropin, and then the thyroid will respond by producing less of its own hormones with hypothyroidism as a result.

*Some people have symptoms of hypothyroidism even though the amount of thyroid hormone in the blood is normal. One of the symptoms is raised levels of thyrotropin, indicating that the body signals need for more thyroid hormones. This variant may be caused by conditions elsewhere in the body that make it difficult for the hormone to reach their destination in the cells. In many of these cases the immune system produces anti-bodies against the thyroid hormones. This variant is called sub-clinical hypothyroidism, and responds to the same treatment as ordinary hypothyroidism.

*Some types of food can contribute to a depressed thyroid function or aggravate hypothyroidism when eaten raw in great amounts: Brussel sprouts, broccoli, corn oil, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, kohlrabi, radishes, rutabaga, soy and turnips. By cooking these vegetables, the depressing effect is decreased.

*Factors suspected for causing hypothyroidism are: The artificial sweetener aspartame, mercury pollution, dental fillings containing mercury, fluoride and heavy metal pollution.

HOW CAN HYPOTHYROIDISM BE TREATED

For serious hypothyroidism caused by tissue destruction, external supplement of thyroid hormones is necessary.

When the condition is caused by lack of iodine in the diet, dietary changes and iodine supplements will be a part of the treatment.

Less serious, but painful hypothyroidism is sometimes also treated with hormone supplements. In these cases it is difficult to find the right dose, and treatment may result in hormone poisoning.

You can sometimes alleviate hypothyroidism by reducing the amount of food suspected for depressing the thyroid function: Brussel sprouts, broccoli, corn oil, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, kohlrabi, radishes, rutabaga, soy, soy products and turnips. However, these food types are valuable in many ways, so it is probably not wise to cut them out totally. Also try to avoid artificial ingredients like the sweetener aspartame, conserving additives and fluoride.

Changing out mercury dental fillings and avoiding mercury or heavy metal exposure may help to ameliorate the condition.

You may also alleviate the condition by eating food that stimulates the thyroid function according to practical experience: Chia seed, dulse, fish from the ocean, flax seed, pumpkin seed, seaweed, coconut and brewer yeast.

You can find nutritional supplements to help for hypothyroidism. The compositions of these products vary:

*They may contain building materials that the thyroid uses to make its hormones, for example: iodine, acetyl-L-tyrosine or L-phenylalanine.

*They may also contain vitamins and minerals that stimulate the mechanism of hormone production by being a part of necessary enzymes, or by helping the absorption of the ingredients that hormones are made from, like: Magnesium, zinc, selenium, copper and vitamin E.

*They may furthermore contain constituents that stimulate tissue regeneration by being part of tissue building enzymes, and thus helping to restore a degraded thyroid, for example: Folic acid or folate, vitamin B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid or pantothenate), B6 (pyridoxine), B12 (cyanocobalamin) and molybdenum.

Genital wart

18/10/09

Genital warts are warts that are found on the buttocks or on the vagina. If you find small bumps on your private areas, that you don’t know what they are, they could very well be genital warts. Genital warts are spread through sex, anal sex, and regular intercourse and through oral sex. If you have had unprotected sex with someone that you really don’t know, it can take up to three months for genital warts to show up. Even if you don’t have sex, and you have just oral sex, you can still end up with genital warts, but around your mouth.

While it can be difficult and embarrassing to see a doctor, these warts are not going to go away on their own. With proper medication, you will be able to get rid of genital warts. Genital warts are contagious just as a cold could be. If you have genital warts, your doctor or nurse is going to be able to tell what they are just by looking at them. If you are a woman and you have genital warts, you should see your gynecologist to determine if you have them inside, where your uterus and cervix are located as well. Women are at risk to have genital warts spread the to portions of the inner body where they can spread faster, and grow to be painful on the cervix or on the organs.

If you meet someone new, and you don’t know if they have a sexual disease, it is for your own protection that you don’t have sex, of any type. If you are able to use a condom at least you are somewhat protected, but that is not always a guarantee as well.

Genital warts are spread by a virus that is known as HPV. HPV is also the same virus that will give you warts on your hands, feet, on the elbows or knees, but the HPV virus that gives genital warts is a little different strain. The same noticeable types of warts you see on your hands, that get crusty and seem to be puss filled are the types of warts that will be found on the genitals. If you have genital warts, you can spread them to someone by intercourse, by oral sex, and by anal sex. Genital warts are something you can get rid of, but only with the proper treatment and antibiotics.

What you should know is that with treatment genital warts will disappear, but they can resurface and come back even after treatment, which is why it is so very important to avoid having sex with someone you don’t know, and avoid having sex with another person if you do have genital warts. You can pass along genital warts to another person, even if you don’t have the symptoms or the warts appearing on your skin. Be sure that you know and trust a person before having sex with someone. If you do find that you have genital warts, seek treatment to get your genital warts under control.

A figurative “big heart” connotes that someone is kind and generous. But a literal “big heart” is not a good thing, especially to people in the medical profession. People often mistake this as a disease, however, doctors say that this is an underlying problem to certain cardiovascular conditions.

Cardiomegaly

Cardiomegaly is a medical condition where the size of the heart becomes enlarged. This abnormal enlargement exceeds the cardio-thoracic ratio of more than 0.50. A person’s cardio-thoraric ratio determines which size a person’s heart is supposed to be, this makes the normal heart size difficult to exact as everybody has a different cardio-thoracic ratio.

For most people, an enlarged heart will not manifest any signs or symptoms from the condition, however, some people do manifest symptoms. Symptoms depend on the severity of the case of the patient. Most commonly, these symptoms are associated to the heart’s inability to pump enough blood properly, these include:

l Breathing dificulties.

l Dizziness.

l Arrhythmia (abnormal heart rhythm)

l Edema (swelling)

Heart enlargement is not an easy thing to diagnose. Physicians usually suggest for patients to undergo a series of testing to determine if they do have cardiomegaly. These battery of tests include:

l X-rays.

l Echocardiograms.

l Electro Cardio Gram (ECG)

What causes heart enlargement?

As what was mentioned, heart enlargement is not a disease on its own, but rather an indication of an underlying condition. Cardiomegaly may be caused by thickening of cardiac muscles, ventricular hypertrophy, and exercise.

Cardiomegaly is said to be a result of thickening of the heart muscles that occurs when the heart has an increase in its workload. The increased workload is most often caused by other health conditions present in the body. Some of the noted conditions that may cause of heart enlargement includes:

l High blood pressure

l Heart valve disorders

l Viral infections

l Severe anemia

l Thyroid disorders

l Hemochromatosis (excessive iron in the body)

l Amyloidosis (abnormal protein build-up in an organ)

Exercise is also a contributory factor for heart enlargement. Athletes have been said to have bigger hearts. But this is a result of their extensive training, and is not in any way an indication of the presence of a medical condition. In this one instance, cardiomegaly is not considered a bad thing.

Heart enlargement may also becaused by ventricular hypertrophy. In this case, the left or the right ventricle, in some cases both, become enlarged. This condition is more common for people who have chronic systolic heart failure or cardiomyopathies. Cardiomyopathy is the loss of strength of cardiac muscles.

How is cardiomegaly treated?

Treatment depends on the severity of the cardiomegaly. It is most often a medication or treatment procedure related to the underlying condition. Diuretics have been used to enhance serous fluid output in the body, to prevent heart swelling. ACE inhibitors and Beta-blockers are used to treat underlying cardiovascular conditions that may have contributed to the enlargement of the heart.

As you are reading this, more research is being conducted to come up with a more effective treatment for cardiomegaly. The aim of these research is to completely do away with cardiomegaly, as well as the conditions associated with it. And hopefully, soon enough, a cure will be introduced to the market.

A keystone of one of television’s most popular series is the practice of therapy in HBO’s The Sopranos. The Sopranos manages to address the biases and benefits of therapy and treatment while also combining clear-cut, unavoidable realities as to its effectiveness and the reasons why it seems to be everywhere.

Just like on the show, therapy has long been thought of as untrustworthy, the refuge of the weak, practiced by money grabbing pseudo doctors who offer little more than an extensive and hard to comprehend vocabulary. As society finds that it is spending less and less time on the struggle for the basics necessary to life, however, the more therapy has become a part of our social fabric.

Therapy is mow common practice for the individual as well as within relationships. The Sopranos is not the only show to find a huge market among those interested in the practice of therapy, as anyone who has seen the latest daytime television ratings can attest to. The Dr. Phil show has made a huge cultural impact on nothing more than one man’s practice of therapeutical processes.

One of the main strengths of therapy is the fact that no matter how small the problem seems, it always helps to talk about it. It is true that disturbed individuals commonly benefit and are required to receive therapy and treatment, and in part this is the cause for much of the reason for the cultural vilification of the process. More and more people, however, are beginning to realize that going to therapy doesn’t mean they have the makings of a sociopath or a horrible marriage. It just gives them a chance to discuss area in their lives that they might be struggling with, and a qualified therapist is equipped to point the discussions in the right direction and offer solutions to immediate as well as potential problems.

As with any treatment, therapy needs to be approached with caution. Therapists who are not properly qualified can do much more damage to a person than they had before going in. Always take care to confirm a therapist’s credentials and record before signing up for sessions.

Meals To Die For

02/03/09

The average person understands the basic concept behind food allergies. They cause inflammation and swelling, often with

rather comedic results. Food allergies also tend to crop up seemingly randomly, with someone growing up with an allergy to

shrimp and suddenly finding out that it has somehow faded away with time. Food allergies can also have an effect on someone’s

lifestyle, with multiple ones becoming a severe limitation on what foods a person is allowed to eat without being afraid.

However, most people see food allergies as a source of discomfort, often disregarding the fact that some of them can be quite

lethal.

There are some common food allergies and some that are not so common, but all of them can be potentially lethal. There are

numerous fatalities every year that are caused by fatal reactions to food-related allergies, with the death toll being 58% of

all allergic people dying because of it. According to the most recent statistics released by the US government, an estimated

12 million US citizens have some sort of food allergy. The percentages on how many of those allergies are potentially lethal

tends to differ, but roughly 150 to 200 people die each year because of allergy complications.

More often than not, these deaths are actually easily preventable. Food being such a basic component of human life and time

becoming less and less available to the average person, eating out is becoming more and more common. Preventing lethal

consequences is really as simple as asking what the ingredients used are, thus finding out whether an allergen was used or

not. This can, in theory, go a long way in helping an allergic person avoid the nastier side effects of their food allergy.

In most cases, the deaths caused by the allergens were triggered outside the home environment, where the victim had little to

no control over what items went into the food he was eating. On some cases, he was misinformed of the ingredients, but for

the most part, the fatalities simply chose not to ask and assumed it was safe.

Epinephrine is often carried by people that have food allergies as a treatment in the event of an attack. The drug is capable

of alleviating the symptoms, such as palpitations and inflammation, if administered in a timely manner. However, there are

some caveats to the use of this medication. For example, the drug is self-injected, which can be difficult to do if the

person realizes his mistake too late or if the effects are preventing him from doing so. Also, there is a certain time frame

wherein the drug is effective, with most of the fatalities being cases where the medication was administered too late.

Antihistamines have sometimes been used to help alleviate the problem, but their effectiveness differs from case to case to

be consistently used as an anti-allergy first aid measure.

Statistics show that most of the fatalities from food allergies are within the 13 to 30 age bracket, which suggest a number

of potential correlations. It is possible that the reactions are more extreme and potentially lethal to the physiologies of

people in those ages. However, that does not take into account the fact that the physical resistance of a teenager and a

30-year old are drastically different from one another. Another theory states that people of those ages are simply less

likely to be careful about what foods they eat. Some anecdotal evidence suggests that people who have lived long lives with

food allergies managed to take their condition seriously only after a potentially fatal attack.

Nymphomania (and the male counterpart, satyriasis) are no longer official psychological disorders. Arguably, the two above conditions were never really mental health issues in the first place. Rather, the two seemed more like reactions and developments based on culture, morality, and perception. Indeed, even when the two were “official” problems, it was difficult to define what sort of sexual behavior could be considered to fall under them. Most of the definitions of nymphomania stem from a time when study of a woman’s mental health was intrinsically linked to the condition of her genitalia and sexual health. Scientifically speaking, there probably is a correlation, but not in the way it was originally envisioned.

The History Behind It

The psychosis (and the term is used loosely) classification known as nymphomania is categorized by excessive sexual behavior. This was defined during a time when human sexuality was poorly understood and a number of beliefs on “appropriate female behavior” were prevalent. Essentially, during the time that the term was coined and classified as a form of psychosis, women were not supposed to have sexual urges. Women who had mental and emotional stability did not behave in a sexual manner, the definition at the time being a very stringent one. Activities such as flirting were often enough to arouse suspicion, but there are recorded examples of more extreme behavior, such as public masturbation and sexually attacking random men. While women in these reports certainly had some form of mental health disorder, most experts now agree that it was not “nymphomania.”

Subjective Definitions and Diagnosis

Nymphomania has always been the target of subjective definitions. Judging whether or not a woman’s advances and behavior are inappropriate is difficult, mainly because there are countless factors involved. For example, the relative moral climate of the time and place where the assessment is made can play a role. What would have been considered nymphomaniac-like behavior during the late 18th or 19th century could be considered rather typical sexual behavior for today’s generation. Also, individual perceptions can make it impossible to find a consensus on what does and does not fall under the term. What may be seen as lewd and offensive to one observer could be little more than an expression of sexual health and interest for another. This gave nymphomania the distinction of being the only mental health disorder wherein the diagnosis relies entirely on the judgment of the psychologist, and not based on some objective standard.

Removal From the Books

The terms “nymphomania” and “satyriasis” have both been removed from the list of disorders, replaced by the term “hypersexuality.” The term is not quite a direct replacement of the above. In spirit, it covers much the same problem, but the letter of the definitions and descriptions differ. The new term only takes effect when the behavior becomes clinically dangerous, rather than relying on socio-cultural judgments. In other words, there has to be some sort of notable psychiatric effect other than the behavior itself. However, there is still debate on what would have to be considered before someone is diagnosed with having hypersexuality. The term has been accepted, but there is still heated debate on what behavioral signs are to be taken as symptoms of the problem. For the time being, the only consensus is when the behavior becomes disruptive to other activities and psychological processes.

Depression also called as “The Common Cold of Mental Health” is a mental health disorder that affects your body, mood, and thoughts. It even affects your everyday routine like the way you eat, the way you sleep, the way you think, and the way you feel about yourself. The people who’s suffering from depression may experience difficulty with their short term memory. Negative thoughts and thinking also occurs in their mind. They always feel that they are sad and hopeless and the results of these are poor self esteem, excessive guilt and self-criticism. When they reached their serious depression, they have self-destructive thoughts. For some people, because of the negative emotions being experienced, they lack motivation and concentration they no longer enjoy activities that they once found pleasant experienced.

Some types of depression run in families, indicating that a biological vulnerability to depression can be inherited. This seems to be the case especially with bipolar disorder. Studies have been done of families in which members of each generation develop bipolar disorder. The investigators found that those with the illness have a somewhat different genetic makeup than those who do not become ill. However, the reverse is not true. That is, not everybody with the genetic makeup that causes vulnerability to bipolar disorder has the illness. Apparently, additional factors, possibly a stressful environment, are involved in its onset.

Psychotherapy can help treat depression. A significant number (50 percent) of patients with mild to moderate forms of depression obtain substantial symptom relief with psychotherapy. Many patients begin to feel the effects of psychotherapy in the first few weeks. Full remission rather than improvement is the objective of treatment. If there is no symptom improvement at all within 6 weeks, the choice of treatment modality should be reevaluated. For patients who improve but who are still symptomatic after 12 weeks, treatment with medication is a strong consideration.

Maintenance Antidepressant medication is the most commonly known treatment strategy for mental health disorders. How do they work? It depends on the type of antidepressant. Basically, depression medicines alter brain chemistry by effecting neurotransmitters, the brain’s chemical substances which are responsible for various functions within the body. Anti-depressants are also used to treat other psychiatric and medical conditions. To obtain medications for depression, you need a prescription from a doctor, which can be filled at a pharmacy. A common mistake is stopping antidepressant medications without talking to your doctor first. Many people stop because of side effects and never talk to their doctor about other options. Now there are many different types of medicine for depression. Sometimes it may take several tries to find the right anti depression medication for you. The best antidepressant will be prescribed based on many factors such as the symptoms you’re experiencing, other medicines you’re taking, other medical conditions you have and the antidepressant’s potential side effects.
