Ten Steps To Managing Arthritis
28/05/10
Did you know that approximately 70 million Americans may have arthritis in one form or another, and that you may be one of them? Think there’s nothing you can do about it? Well, here’s some great news! You can act right now to lessen the incidence of arthritis or to reduce the pain and discomfort that typically accompanies the disease. Here are ten simple steps that can improve your health, emotional outlook, and pain level, and generally make it easier to cope with arthritis.
1. Pay attention to symptoms and see your doctor. If you have pain, stiffness or swelling in or around a joint for more than two weeks, it’s time to see your doctor. Only a doctor can tell if it’s arthritis. Write down observations and symptoms as they occur. Put them in your purse or wallet before your next doctor’s visit. That way, you’ll have them with you when you see the doctor.
2. Get an accurate diagnosis. “You have arthritis” is not a diagnosis. Ask for a specific diagnosis of the type of arthritis you have. There are more than 100 types, and each one requires different treatments. Getting the right treatment requires getting the right diagnosis.
3. Start early. The earlier, the better. Early diagnosis and treatment can often mean less joint damage and less pain.
4. Avoid Excess Stress on Joints. Exercise to reduce pain and fatigue and to increase range of motion. It relieves stress and can help enable you to maintain your daily activities. Use simple stretching techniques to keep joints and muscles flexible. Exercising in the water can build strength and increase range of motion while the water’s buoyancy reduces wear and tear on sore joints. Use assistive devices to make tasks easier.
5. Watch your weight. Try to maintain the recommended weight for your age and body type. Every extra pound means added stress to your knees and hips. Excess weight can mean more pain, contribute to and aggravate osteoarthritis, and increase your risk of gout. Follow a healthy diet regimen. Research has shown the importance of antioxidants in reducing the risk of osteoarthritis and its progression.
6. Take your medication just as your doctor prescribes. If you’re tempted to stop because you feel it’s not working or you believe it’s causing side effects, call your doctor first. It can take weeks, or even months, for the full benefits of a medication to become apparent, and some side effects ease over time. Stopping a medication abruptly may not only cause you to miss out on its benefits, it can be downright dangerous. Be sure to tell your doctor about all the medications you’re taking, both prescription and over the counter.
7. Protect yourself when you go out into the sun. Some forms of arthritis, as well as certain medications, can leave you more vulnerable to the sun’s harmful rays. At a minimum, use sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat for protection.
8. Talk to Someone About Arthritis. Each week, commit to learning something new about arthritis and sharing it with others. Understanding your disease is an important step in managing it. Talk with family, friends, and co-workers. A support group is important and the more they understand about how arthritis affects your life, the more they’ll be able to help you get through the hard times.
9. Relax. Pain can cause both physical and emotional stress. Pain and stress have similar effects on the body, e.g. increased heart rate and blood pressure; fast, shallow breathing; and muscle cramps. Relaxation can help you reverse these effects, give you a sense of well being, and make it easier to manage your pain.
10. Consider taking a nutritional supplement. If your current medication isn’t working as well as you’d like, or if it’s causing unacceptable side effects, ask your doctor about other treatment options. There are several all-natural functional health beverages available that have desirable anti-inflammatory properties. Check them out online.
Of course, there are many other ways to lessen the pain and discomfort of arthritis, but these ten are an excellent place to start. Most importantly, while arthritis may limit some of the things you can do, it doesn’t have to control your life. Build your life around wellness, and think of pain as a signal to take positive action to help you manage your condition. Think positively, eat well, and exercise regularly.
Lastly, resolve to enjoy our beautiful world. As the old saying goes, “Live like there’s no tomorrow; love like you’ve never been hurt; dance like no-one is watching.”
Bruce Bailey, Ph.D.
Everyone will suffer pain at some point in their lives. Grim as this may sound, some pain is necessary &ndash it’s a signal from our brain that something is wrong in our body, something we need to address to protect our health and well-being. It can be caused by anything from a dental cavity to a broken bone to a disease. Once we determine where the pain is coming from, we can diagnose and address the health problem, thus alleviating the pain.
Sometimes, however, pain isn’t done away with so easily &ndash it remains with us despite all efforts to banish it. This is called ‘chronic’ pain, distinguishable from ‘acute’ pain by its persistence. Common examples of chronic pain include backaches, migraine headaches, and arthritis.
The most popular treatment for chronic pain are prescription medications, but these often have adverse side effects ranging from nausea to fatigue, and can cease to be effective once a patient builds a tolerance. Acupuncture has been used as a form of natural pain relief and cure for many chronic conditions for over two thousand years. Originating in China, acupuncture involves piercing the skin with thin needles on specific points of the body. Patients have claimed acupuncture has proven effective in treating ailments such as neck pain, migraine headaches, arthritic pain, and even depression.
Herbal remedies offer another time-tested alternative to conventional therapies, providing natural pain relief to sufferers without many of the unwanted side effects of conventional medicines. There usually several herbal treatments for a particular condition; popular herbal remedies include emu oil, which can alleviate the pain of arthritis, and good old Vitamin E, which helps minimize scarring. The downside of herbal treatments is that they often take longer to achieve noticeable results; the upside is that you aren’t introducing man-made foreign compounds into your body, and run less risk of side effects or damaging your overall health.
Although it may sound like well-worn advice with little glitter or pizzazz, perhaps the best advice is to take care of yourself &ndash get proper nutrition by eating fewer processed foods and more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Take care to get enough sleep each night, and take time out of each day for exercise &ndash even simple activities like taking the stairs at work or a walk around the block go a long way towards improving your health.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Enema
11/01/10
The enema was originally conceived as a sort of medical procedure, though one that was not entirely pleasant to undergo. Digestive discomfort and constipation were the primary problems that the procedure was designed to deal with, though there may be other conditions that require the use of one. Since then, thanks to the spreading availability of ways to administer an enema outside of a medical setting, they have been used in a number of ways that the original inventor likely did not intend. It is doubtful that the man responsible for the enema even conceived of some of the more “intimate” uses his creation might have, such as being a sexual health supplement.
The mechanics of an enema involve introducing a liquid into the rectum and colon via the anus. Originally conceived as a medical procedure, there can be any number of reasons why people would enjoy it being used as a sexual health supplement. The reasons can range from the male enjoying how it stimulates the prostate gland to virtually anyone somehow finding pleasure in the prospect of having an assortment of liquids pumped into their body through an orifice that traditionally goes the other way around. Still others find that an enema can be a good means of preparation before partaking of anal intercourse, as a means of removing fecal matter and minimizing the chances of infection. Finally, others find it to trigger mild levels of dominance and submission in participants, making it a possible sexual health supplement for people who like that sort of thing.
As a form of dominance-submission play, the use of an enema as a sexual health supplement is relatively mild and ordinary. This is particularly true if one realizes that there are alternatives out there that are much, much less in line with the normal thing. Regardless, the increasing use of enemas as a part of some couple’s sexual escapades has prompted the “sex toys” market to sell out home enema kits, along with a number of similar products. These products can have a wide range of types, with some looking almost like the medical tools used for the procedure, while others have decided to add a little “spice” to the design, without sacrificing the functionality. There is a wide variety of liquids that can be used in an enema. The most obvious choice would be water, but some couples might find that to be too mundane for their purposes. Some of them use liquids similar to water, such as alcohol or coffee (most experts find that organic, ground coffee works better than the instant sort), while others may use more exotic liquids in their enemas. For a number of couples, the use of an enema is less a matter of what liquid is being introduced into the body, and more a matter of the position of the body and the enema. Apparently, some positions have a deeper psychological impact than others, heightening the sense of pleasure that both dominants and sub missives get out of the act.
You might have been forced to suffer muscle pain several times in your life. Using a muscle relaxant is the best method to relieve from muscle pains of all kinds. These are drugs which will affect the functioning of muscle and thereby decreases the tone of muscles. All kinds of muscle pains are reduced with the help of relaxants.
When you find symptoms of muscle problems like spasm and pain, try to go for a muscle relaxant. This will alleviate the pain and will help in problems concerning hyperreflexia. There are mainly two kinds of muscle relaxants used in helping to deal with muscle pain.
Neuromuscular blockers are kind of muscle relaxants that will interfere with the transmissions and thereby will not have CNS activity. Such relaxants are used in surgical procedures and will be of great use in cases that require intensive care or emergency attention. Such kind of relaxants is used normally in cases of paralysis.
Another class of muscle relaxants is used as centrally acting medicines. They will alleviate pains such as musculoskeletal problems and will reduce the pain due to spasms. This is the most commonly used relaxants generally used in cases of muscle pains. Treating muscle pain with muscle relaxants is the best method for lessening discomforts due to improper functioning of muscles.
The muscle relaxants will help to regulate the aches in the back and in the spine. When chronic muscle pain affect our normal health conditions and causes severe pain, we will be troubled and this will even interfere with our sleep. In such cases, a relaxant will help us to deal with chronic pain of spasm and will help to improve sleep.
Medications like Skelaxin, Felxeril, Tramadol, Soma etc will help you to avoid all pain due to muscle problems. Skelaxin is normally preferred since they are free of problems like drowsiness in case of day time use. Flexeril can be used on a regular basis and can be used to increase sleep slowly. This will help patients suffering from sleeplessness to wake up freshly in the morning.
The muscle relaxants are prescribed by doctors in the treatment of acute muscle pain. The mechanism of these medicines might differ slightly, though all have common effect. Problems in connection with mobility and that will affect the mood of people can be wiped off completely with the help of these medications. They can also help people to get rid of fatigue health conditions.

Cancer is associated with a lot of things. Grief, sadness, death, chemotherapy, baldness, and many others are all words or
things that have some sort of link to another. However, one thing that is prevalent, no matter what form of cancer one has,
is pain. The fact is, cancer causes pain and, in some extreme cases, the therapy needed to put the cancer in recession also
causes its share of pain. While not everyone that has cancer requires regular doses of pain relief medication, there is a
large segment of them that do. Just what is it about cancer, and some of the treatments for it, that causes so much pain?
Cancer can cause pain by its very nature. As the core of the cancerous cells spreads, it begins to kill more and more of the
healthy cells around it. In some people, this process can have them reaching for pain relief drugs rather quickly, while for
others, it may not even register. Also, as the cancerous tumor grows in the body, it starts to put a large amount of pressure
on whatever organs or systems are around it. Depending on the cancer, this can include muscles, lungs, the heart, or the
brain. This pressure can also trigger a powerful pain response in a number of patients. Finally, the cancer may secrete a
number of chemicals that can cause the brain to register a pain response, though this is a trait that does not appear in all
known cancers.
The medication for these problems generally does not wander very far from standard pain relief medications. Among the more
commonly suggested medications are analgesics, such as aspirin or Tylenol. These drugs are relatively low-intensity, which is
usually fine for most cancer patients, particularly if the tumor cells have gone into recession. For instances when something
more potent is needed to provide the patient with pain relief, there are other options that a doctor can look into. For
moderate cases, some doctors will rely on low-strength opioids such as codeine, or non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs
such as ibuprofen. Finally, in the most drastic cases, high-intensity opioids can also be used, though these are only rarely
prescribed due to their highly addictive nature.
Some people might complain that they aren’t getting adequate medication or treatment for their condition. One factor behind
this might have to do with the knowledge of the doctor in charge. There are some doctors who do not ask about pain in cancer
patients, and are thus unaware of the problem. There are also some doctors who do not have the knowledge necessary to
properly treat pain. If that is the case, it is acceptable and advisable to ask that you be referred to a pain specialist to
help with the problem. However, if the patient himself refuses or is reluctant to reveal that they are feeling pain, then the
doctor can do very little. It is best to remember that a doctor is only able to treat the problems that he is aware of, so
keeping him in the dark might do more harm than the illness itself.
The recent removal of several high profile and popular prescription pain medications of the same pharmaceutical family, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, from the buyer’s market has left many people searching for a safer alternative for powerful, fast and effective pain relief. The most recent removal was Pfizer’s pulling of Bextra, citing serious skin reactions, sometimes fatal, and two others, Vioxx and Celebrex have been linked to heart related risks. The dangerous side effects of this particular family of medications is definitely cause for alarm, and has many seeking alternatives that will manage their pain effectively, without the serious risks of several pharmaceutical pain killers.
While there have always been natural and homeopathic pain relief remedies, there has never really been a powerful and viable alternative for people with chronic pain related to ailments ranging from back pain, osteoarthritis, and fibromyalgia, to rheumatism and hundreds of other joint, mucle, and nerve related ailments. These individuals are in need of serious pain reduction therapy on an ongoing basis, and the typical natural remedy simply cannot compare to the speed and effectiveness of prescription pain medications and narcotic drugs, which suppresses pain by targeting the central nervous system. That is, until now.
Before we get into that, let’s look at some of the more widely known natural and herbal remedies for pain relief. These include varying dosages and combinations of “Devil’s Claw”, Willow Bark, the ayurvedic compound Boswellia, Camomile, Bromelain, St. John’s Wort, Horsetail, and numerous others too abundant to mention.
As previously mentioned, these herbs and natural compounds can soothe minor pains and aches, but do not work as effectively as their man-made prescription couterparts. There is now a natural pain remedy on the market that is actually highly effective, and has worked very well for many as a natural pain relief alternative by utilizing a specific blend of several high-grade botanicals designed to aggressively manage pain throughout the day.
These people not only are enjoying the benefits of it’s natural pain relief, but also, and perhaps even more importantly, they are enjoying the peace of mind knowing that they are not seriously endangering their health in other ways simply so they can manage their pain.
No one want to be incapacitated and limited by pain, but who wants to endanger their health just to manage it and live a fulfilling life, and why should you have to? Well, now these people have a natural pain relief solution that has literally been harvested from the land, unaltered, and in it’s purest state. Now, doesn’t that sound healthy?
Mend Your Arthritis Pain Relief
22/11/08
=====KNOW YOUR ARTHRITIS=====
Arthritis is referred to as the nation?s number one crippling disease and the most common chronic disease in people over 40, arthritis affects more than 40 million Americans.
And this figure is expected to rise to 60 million by 2020, according to the Center for Disease Control.
Arthritis generally afflicts people between the ages of 20 and 50, but can affect all ages, even infants.
The average age of onset is 47 and about three out of every five people with arthritis are under 65 years of age.
Arthritic expenditures for just one person due to lost wages, medical treatment and other related expenses can come to more than $150,000 in his or her lifetime.
And doctors believe there are over 100 different forms of arthritis, all sharing one main characteristic: all forms cause joint inflammation.
What can be done for arthritis pain relief? Many things…
For example, weight and nutrition are only a couple of factors that play a role in arthritic pain.
And yet shedding even 10 pounds to relieve weight from knees and finding the right nutritional strategy can help relieve pain a lot.
=====EXERCISE IN ARTHRITIS=====
Exercise can be very beneficial for arthritis sufferers, often relieving stiffness in joints, strengthening muscles thereby reducing stress on joints, keeping bone and cartilage tissue strong and healthy, and increasing flexibility.
A recommended 30-minute minimum of daily activity is the norm.
Using aquatics: exercising in a pool-is a great way to exercise as well.
Water is an excellent aid because it provides resistance that builds muscle in the entire body while reducing shock to the joints at the same time.
Additionally, because the whole body tends to become involved in aquatic exercise the added benefit of cardiovascular exercise is enjoyed.
If at all possible, find a heated pool to work out in. Warm water is soothing to the joints and will cause the blood vessels to dilate, increasing circulation.
With that in mind, it is often beneficial to add using a spa to your regimen, perhaps after your workout, in order to provide some soothing jets of water to your muscles and even more help with increased circulation, which is always vital when dealing with arthritis.
=====DRUGS IN ARTHRITIS=====
There are many over-the-counter (OTC) pain medications for arthritis pain sufferers that can be purchased without physicians? prescriptions.
Some are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) ? some are OTCs / some require a prescription, acetaminophen and various topical medications.
Users need to be aware of possible risk from long term use or product abuse, though, and consult their medical advisors before and during use.
The most common OTC NSAIDs are ibuprofen, naproxen and aspirin.
However, the misuse of some of these can cause blockage of an enzyme in the body that aids in the protection of the stomach lining and other areas.
Misuse can lead to stomach ulcers and bleeding, and liver and kidney trouble. (The same drug abuse issues can result from prescription NSAIDs, too).
Use the right way, these drugs can help with pain relief, inflammation and fever reduction, and blood clot prevention.
=====JOINT REPLACEMENT SURGERY IN ARTHRITIS=====
There are currently many options in orthopedic (bone) surgery for people with arthritis.
Joint replacement is the most common option. According to the National Joint Replacement Foundation, (NJRF) over 435,000 Americans underwent this procedure last year.
These numbers have boosted joint replacement to one of the most successful medical discoveries and the absolute most significant surgery in the field of arthritis treatment.
Joint replacement is the process of removing one?s entire joint as well as any damaged tissue and replacing it with a metal prosthesis.
This prosthesis provides the patient with much need relief from pain.
This surgery most effective on the weight bearing joints such as the knees, hips, and ankles, however, it has been used for all joints with successful results.
However, all health care planning should be made under the guidance of your own medical and health practitioner.
When you ask what arthritis is, professinals will tell you it’s inflammation of one or more joints. But you know it better as pain, swelling, stiffness, deformity, and/or a diminished range of motion of those joints! It’s estimated that over 50 million Americans suffer from osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and other related conditions.
Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. Osteo arthritis seems to come with the wear and tear of aging and affects nearly three-quarters of those over 50. The onset of arthritis is marked by morning stiffness, crackling joints, and perhaps some pain. As it progresses it causes discomfort, more pain, and some disability. It also causes an enormous consumption of painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs that can have undesirable long-term effects.
If left untreated, osteo and rheumatoid arthritis, along with other forms of rheumatoid disease, can become progressively worse… painful crippling can result. This is particularly true of rheumatoid arthritis, which can destroy joints, unless effective treatment is administered in time.
Modern medicine doesn’t have much to offer for these chronic conditions… offering only symptomatic temporary relief. True, painkillers along with the so-called NSAIDs, non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, are effective in reducing symptoms quickly. However, these often cause serious side effects such as ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding, and they don’t stop the progression of the disease. In the long run they have actually proven to worsen the condition by accelerating joint destruction.
Coping with the chronic pain of arthritis can be frustrating. You get the feeling you’re all alone facing the daily challenges caused by your arthritis symptoms. And, the traditional treatments leave a lot to be desired. It doesn’t have to be this bad!
The last few years of research on arthritis have brought some hope to this dismal picture. Old herbal remedies such as ginger, nettle, and willow bark, as well as fish oils and the already well-known cartilage constituents glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate, are about to revolutionize the treatment of arthritis. These substances not only give symptomatic relief, but, actually intervene at the root of the arthritis problem and help the body to rebuild functioning joints.
As they quickly sooth your pain, these powerful creams help repair, restore and regenerate cartilage, tendons, muscle and ligaments. Fast acting, these creams increase mobility and optimal repair of joint structures as they help reinforce the body’s protective linings and lubricating fluids by recovering cell stability and function to stop further damage. Really powerful stuff. You can learn more about this non-traditional arthritis treatment at our website.
Millions of Americans suffer with Peripheral Neuropathy and until recently there was no specific treatment available. Peripheral Neuropathy is often associated with Diabetes, but can occur on its own. Typical treatments in the past included physical therapy, medication and in severe cases even surgery, all of these therapies offer little or no relief. Neurologist, Family Physicians and Podiatrists are now referring their patients for Anodyne Therapy with excellent results.
Anodyne Therapy is the only FDA approved treatment specifically for Peripheral Neuropathy. Anodyne Therapy utilizes the healing power of infrared light to stimulate increased nerve function and blood flow to decrease pain and improve feeling. Anodyne Therapy is completely painless, covered by Medicare and extremely effective. Medical research has shown that patients treated with Anodyne therapy experience the following results:
Significant pain relief : 88% , Increased sensory perception 96%, return to normal sensory perception 60% and an overall 72% increase in daily activity levels. There are no side effects and few contra indications for Anodyne Therapy and because it works on the underlying cause of the problem the results are long lasting.
The symptoms of Peripheral Neuropathy usually effect the feet and calves but can also effect the hands and arms. Peripheral Neuropathy can present itself in a number of different ways including; numbness, pain, loss of feeling, weak muscles, difficulty walking and an odd feeling often described as ” a wet sock squeezing the feet.” These symptoms often effect older patients with diabetes and lead to secondary problems including difficulty with walking, balance and the basic activities of daily living.
“A typical patient receiving Anodyne Therapy will receive 24-30 sessions and start to notice results about half way through their treatment plan. A patient is seen three times a week until the therapy is concluded states Maricel Lazo, PT of Monmouth Advanced Medicine in Freehold. She also stated,” Our patients receive Anodyne Therapy, ultrasound, joint mobilizations and strengthening exercises with our physical therapist to insure their long term success. I have seen patients who have been suffering for 20+ years and those requiring walkers return to near normal function in just a couple on months.” Anodyne Therapy is available in only a hand full of clinics in New Jersey and proper diagnosis is a key to the therapy’s success.
Foot Pain Relief At Last
18/11/08
“As an arthritis specialist, one area that I see people complain about more often than almost any other, is their feet.” So says Dr. Nathan Wei, Clinical Director of The Arthritis and Osteoporosis Center of Maryland. “This is too bad because there are many treatments that can be helpful,” Dr. Wei adds.
The foot is made up of 26 bones and 39 muscles…
The foot and ankle are designed to bear weight. The multiple joints in the feet are capable of adjusting to almost any terrain and the padding in the feet are designed to absorb shock.. The ankle joint allows the foot to move up and down, side to side, and inward and outward (inversion and eversion).
Not All Foot Pain Comes From The Foot!
Careful examination of the low back, hip, and knee should be performed because pain from these areas may affect the foot and ankle. In particular, pinched nerves in the low back can cause foot pain and weakness.
Ankle sprains are common- 25,000 people sprain an ankle every day! The goal of treatment is to relieve pain and prevent instability. Treatment of an acute sprain consists of rest, ice compression and elevation (”RICE”). Exercises to help stabilize and strengthen the ankle should be started.
Arthritis of the ankle may cause recurrent pain and swelling. Pain from arthritis typically is made worse by weight-bearing particularly on uneven ground. What this means is you should try to avoid excessive walking or running on uneven ground. Anti-inflammatory medication and proper foot support can do wonders.
Pain in the ball of the foot has many causes…
- Foot strain occurs when a person “overdoes it.” And the treatment is pretty straightforward. Rest.
- Morton’s neuroma (a benign nerve tumor usually located between the 3rd and 4th toes)
- Tarsal tunnel syndrome (pinched nerve in the ankle)
- Arthritis.
Other common causes of foot pain include:
- Stress fractures may occur after excessive walking.
- Achilles tendonitis causes pain in the back of the heel. Treatment consists of anti-inflammatory medicines, rest, a heel lift, and gentle stretching.
- Plantar fasciitis causes pain in the bottom of the heel. Treatment includes rest, anti-inflammatory medication, heel cup, orthotics, stretching, and local steroid injection.
- Flat foot.
Muscle strengthening exercises and orthotics are helpful. Two other common problems are:
- Osteoarthritis, particularly common in the big toe. The big toe will point out to the side. When bursitis alongside the great toe joint develops, this condition is referred to as a bunion. Treatment involves proper padding and footwear. In extreme cases, surgery is required.
- Neuropathy. This painful condition is particularly common in diabetics. This occurs when the small nerves in the feet are damaged. Symptoms include burning, tingling, and pain in the feet - worse at night.
Well fitted orthotics (arch supports) can alleviate not only foot and ankle pain but pain in the knees, hips, low back, and neck!!
We often take the ability to walk for granted. This ability involves the use of two engineering marvels- our feet and ankles. Because of the tremendous amount of force transmitted to the feet with walking, unique problems may develop. Attention to proper preventative care, i.e., comfortable shoes, sox, hygiene, support, along with proper prompt medical care can really put the brakes on foot pain.
