Did you know that people with diabetes are more likely to be overweight and have high blood pressure and high cholesterol. A good percentage of overweight people are likely to have a few metabolic problems at once, this in turn can lead to other problems like heart disease. The term Cardiometabolic Risk means that if you have one of these problems you are at higher risk of having others. If you feel you are overweight it is best to go and check yourself out at you local G.P. and see if you have any of the following problems:
High Blood Pressure - high blood pressure and diabetes have always been linked together. If you have high blood pressure you are more likely to get heart disease, stroke and kidney disease. At least 35% of people with diabetes have high blood pressure.
Blood fats - Your body stores fat for future energy. A lot of these fats are good for the body but fats such as Triglycerides can lead to a heart attack if levels are to high.
Insulin resistance - Insulin helps the cells in the body to use sugar, Insulin resistance occurs when the cells no longer respond well to insulin.
Obesity - If you are overweight you are more likely to get type 2 diabetes. A body mass index of 25 is considered overweight, a BMI of 30 is considered obese.
If you have pre-diabetes and are afraid of developing type 2 diabetes there is some good news. You will have to make some changes though, your diet will have to change as well as doing more exercise. By having a better diet and doing 30 minutes a day of light exercise you are likely to make a 60% reduction in your chance of getting type 2 diabetes. A good nutritional diet is best, by eating healthy foods such as fruit and vegetables, whole grain foods, dried beans, fish, light meats, non-fat dairy products and lots of water, this will help reduce the risk. Base your diet around these foods and as always eat in moderation, eat to much of anything and you are going to gain weight.

Type 2 diabetes, refers to the non-insulin dependant variation of diabetes. Before we explore natural methods of dealing with this disease let”s get a few things straight. One, although this is considered the less severe type of diabetes, this is still a serious illness and should not be taken lightly. Two, the following recommendations should be used in conjunction with your medical professionals advice, that being said, lets get into it!
Type II also called Adult Onset Diabetes is a widespread problem especially in the western world with our taste for sugary goodness. When you throw large amounts of sugar (candy, soft-drinks, cakes etc) into your digestive system your pancreas starts secreting large quantities of the hormone insulin. Insulin takes the sugar out of your bloodstream and into your cells for use or storage (often as fat).
This is fine, the problems start because some of us cannot cope with the continued avalanche of sugar, eventually (often in your later years, 40″s - 50″s and sometimes earlier) some of the insulin receptors in your cells go on strike and don”t tolerate sugar anymore. This leaves the sugar in your bloodstream, where you don”t want it. And, the amount of insulin produced is lessened.
So, big deal you say! WRONG! Excess sugar in your blood can lead to;
1. Damaged arteries
2. Fatal heart disease
3. Stroke
4. Kidney disease
5. Nerve damage - leading to amputation (yes it has to come off)
6. Dental Disease
How do you know if you have it? (Actually, a huge amount of people have it and go undiagnosed) Get thee to a Dr. In the meantime here are some of the symptoms;
· Increased Urination & Thirst
· Dry Mouth & Vomiting
· Diarrhoea
· Blurred Vision
· Rapid or Irregular Heartbeats
· Dizziness
· Unplanned Weight Loss
· Recurring Yeast or Urinary Infections
O.K. That was the bad news, the good news is this illness is treatable in most cases with proper diet and exercise - and a few herbal helpers. Let”s have a look at what you can do to control, and even reverse some of the symptoms;
Chromium - We looked at this little fellow before in the weight loss section. Chromium Picolinate can help normalize blood sugar levels - studies used around 200 mcg per day. (Check with your Dr. before getting stuck into the Chromium).
Cut back on the sugar and processed foods (including white bread, white rice, potatoes etc).
Eat more pure foods like fruits, vegies (even frozen or canned is OK) and lean meats. Fibre rich foods help stabilize blood sugar as well as supplying vitamins, minerals & antioxidants.
Fish Oil, Omega 3″s. Once again our little fishy capsules come to the rescue. A moderately high intake of essential fatty acids according to some researchers may improve many of the adverse metabolic effects of insulin resistance by lowering blood pressure and triacylglycerol concentrations. Additional research indicates that consuming Omega 3″s may also decrease the likelihood of getting Type II Diabetes.
I would put a healthy diet as number one on the health list, number two would definitely be - EXERCISE, yes you have to get of your behind and do some moving. Healthy muscles require less insulin to get their sugar fix. Even a 30 minute walk a day can make a difference, but…. If you really want to make an impact resistance exercise is king.
That”s weight lifting. You don”t need to be a bodybuilder, just challenge your muscles a bit.
Cinnamon, this warm spice may also significantly help people with type 2 diabetes improve their ability to respond to insulin, thus normalizing their blood sugar levels. Both test tube and animal studies have shown that compounds in cinnamon not only stimulate insulin receptors, but also inhibit an enzyme that inactivates them, thus significantly increasing cells” ability to use glucose. The US Agricultural Research Service have shown that less than half a teaspoon per day of cinnamon reduces blood sugar levels in persons with type 2 diabetes. Add it to your shakes, or put a cinnamon stick into your tea or coffee.
Here”s a surprising one, vinegar may help clamp down on blood sugar spikes from eating starchy carbs like potatoes and pasta. To get the blood sugar benefit of vinegar, try putting starchy foods with vinegar-based sauces or dressings. Or start a meal with a salad dressed in oil and vinegar.
There are many other herbs and plants that can have a positive effect on blood sugar - you can do a little research on the internet. The methods and compounds mentioned above will do a marvellous job of reversing or controlling Type II Diabetes, give all of them a try, and don”t forget to check in with the Pro”s (That”s your Doctor!!!)

Chromium picolinate, broken down, is chromium that is bonded to an amino acid. The chromium portion of the compound is not well absorbed by the body. Therefore, the amino acid picolinate is added to aid in absorption.
Studies have shown that 90 percent of the adult population in the United States has a chromium deficiency in their diet. The best source of chromium is true brewer’s yeast, but it is found in grains and cereals in smaller amounts. Refined forms of these foods are likely to be lacking in sufficient chromium levels. Strenuous physical activity requires a larger intake of chromium in the diet.
Chromium picolinate, a chromium supplement, has profound effects on the body’s overall nutrition and health. It has increased in popularity in recent years because it helps to reduce body fat and increase lean body mass. Research has proven that it can aid in treating:
* High blood sugar
* High blood fat
* Obesity
* Food cravings
* Osteoporosis
* Lack of energy
* Trouble controlling weight
* Low metabolism
In the late 1950s, chromium picolinate was discovered to be essential for proper blood sugar control. It is a key part of desensitizing the body to insulin. Without chromium, blood sugar levels are elevated because insulin is blocked from doing its job. Chromium is one of the essential trace minerals. Its most important function is to work with insulin, which is a hormone. Insulin is responsible for the body’s ability to break down carbohydrates, proteins and fats naturally. Your metabolism affects every cell in your body. All bodily functions are dependent on the proper use and breakdown of these chemicals.
A deficiency of chromium in your diet will lead to an impairment of insulin activity. This insulin resistance allows more glucose to remain in your body, resulting in weight gain and loss of energy.
Insulin is the most important hormone involved in metabolism. Everyone’s body requires proper insulin function to be healthy. Insulin is secreted whenever you eat. It then binds to cells to activate sugar absorption from your bloodstream. The body’s sugar (glucose) is its strongest energy source. The cells use it to fuel the body’s essential functions like metabolism and building muscles.
Because of these needs, chromium picolinate can be used as a supplement to promote weight loss and treat high cholesterol and diabetes. It is an essential supplement for healthy metabolism, especially in older people. People who lack enough chromium picolinate in their diets usually have trouble keeping weight off and feel run down regularly.
Chromium Picolinate and Weight Loss:
Chromium picolinate is not a viable quick fix for permanent weight loss. It is, however, a valuable addition to a healthy and well-designed weight loss program. People who are overweight are generally insulin resistant. For this reason, additional chromium supplementation aids in healthier metabolism and more productive use of insulin. The result is increased weight loss when used in conjunction with proper exercise and a well-balanced diet.
Dietary Interactions and Safety:
Chromium picolinate has been shown in studies to be safe for use with most medications. However, as with any dietary supplement, it is important to discuss your use of this supplement with your physician before planning any dietary changes.
Chromium picolinate was safe in studies in which it was used in amounts exceeding 500 times the recommended daily dosage. The production of this dietary supplement is under the highest quality and safety conditions available. No side effects have been reported since chromium picolinate has been available on the market.
Most daily multiple vitamins contain the recommended daily allowance of chromium picolinate. However, since it is so difficult for the body to absorb effectively, most people need more supplementation than is generally recommended.

Many people struggle to control their weight. However, while they are going on and off various diets, they fail to realize that they are also struggling to control blood sugar. Actually, the cause of blood-sugar problems may be weight problems, as being overweight and having blood sugar problems tend to go hand in hand. Too many blood sugar swings during the day tend to increase hunger jags, snacking, and overeating. When you overeat, you’re much more likely to add on the pounds, setting the stage for obesity, pre-diabetes, and full blown diabetes.
Sadly, both pre-diabetes and overweight have become modern epidemics that are out of control, with two of every three Americans being overweight and over 100 million people having some signs of pre-diabetes. Both of these illnesses are nutritional disorders that result from eating too many unhealthful foods. However, there is good news: you can reverse pre-diabetes and control your weight.
One can self-diagnose pre-diabetes by looking for the most visible symptom: being chubby or fat around the waist. Other clues are cravings sweets and starchy foods, not being hungry at breakfast, and feeling tired or mentally fuzzy after lunch. Many physicians diagnose pre-diabetes when a patient’s fasting blood sugar falls between 100 and 124 mg/dl. There are several dietary factors that significantly increase the risk of overweight. Some of these being: too many calories, too many refined carbs, especially sugars, and too many unhealthful oils.
The average woman needs about 1,600 calories and the typical man needs about 2,000 calories daily, but the average American now consumes 3,900 calories each day, making it difficult to burn off all these calories and causing the accumulation of body fat. Because most excess calories take form of refined carbs and sugars, which are digested rapidly, rapid or extreme spikes in blood sugar levels, elevated insulin levels, and bouts of hunger result, which stimulate low blood sugar. Trans fats, which are found in partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, interfere with the body’s processing of fats and often lead to weight gain. Most of these problematic calories are found in fast foods, microwave foods, and other types of convenience foods, which are all best if they are avoided.
Even though pre-diabetes can be scary, it’s actually an opportunity to improve your eating habits and regain your health. To improve your health you can emphasize quality protein, emphasize high-fiber vegetables and fruits, include grapefruit in your diet, use more vinegar, and add some cinnamon. Since protein stabilizes and safely lowers blood sugar levels, be sure to start each day with some protein with breakfast and eat a little protein with each meal.
Most veggies and fruits are rich in fiber, which helps to lower blood sugar, so opt for salads and steamed broccoli while avoiding crutons, potatoes, bananas, and pears. Despite the calories, eating fresh grapefruit can help in weight reduction. The acetic acid in vinegar can also help to improve blood sugar and insulin levels, reduce appetite, and help with weight loss. Adding cinnamon has also been shown to reduce blood sugar levels. There are also several supplements that have exceptional value in improving insulin function or lowering blood sugar levels. These include lipoic acid, chromium, silymarin, omega-3 fish oils, vitamin D, and Pycnogenol.
You can also enhance the benefits of diet and supplements by increasing your physical activity as it helps build muscle and burn blood sugar and fat. Tackling pre-diabetes can not only reduce your long-term risk for health problems, such as heart disease and Alzheimer’s disease, but also can allow you to quickly gain more energy and feel less post-meal fatigue.

Every day somebody somewhere in the world is diagnosed with type ii diabetes. It doesn”t sound like a big deal compared with the vast amount of diseases that the human body can develop but unfortunately, it is. The problem with type ii diabetes is that it is a silent potential killer.
The symptoms of type ii diabetes can often be attributed to a myriad of other complaints from fatigue to excessive dieting. Not only are the symptoms difficult to read they are not the type that immediately sends alerts to the brain to see a doctor. Symptons of type ii diabetes are generally painless. It is usually only when we are uncomfortable or in pain that we seek medical assistance. If you have type ii diabetes and wait until that stage it will be too late.
The only way to accurately determine if you have type ii diabetes is to have a diabetes test by a qualified medical professional. There is nothing at all wrong with conducting a home urination test if that is available in your country but this must be followed up with a proper physical examination by a doctor. Whilst home testing can be useful it is not accurate and certainly not an appropriate measure to accurately diagnose the extent of the disease and the appropriate treatment.
Children generally develop type one diabetes in childhood but it is becoming a trend for children now to develop type two diabetes. In Japan type ii diabetes affects at least 80% of recently diagnosed children. Studies in Australia and New Zealand indicate that some ethnic groups are at greater risk of developing childhood diabetes. In particular, children at risk are Torres Strait islanders, Maoris, Pacific Islanders and Aborigines.
Your genes may make you more susceptible to diseases that can be inherited. Diabetes is no exception. A parent that has type ii diabetes is highly probable to pass that disease to their offspring.
Genetics plays a large role in our good health. In order to ensure that we can care for our bodies to the best of our knowledge it is necessary to keep accurate family medical history records. If you have not already got a record of your family”s medical history I highly recommend that you start work on one. Your family history of medical issues should keep track of any diseases, problems or susceptibilities that family members may suffer from. By keeping an accurate record of these matters future generations will be able to utilise your hard work to ensure that they take measures to prevent developing type ii diabetes.Find out more about diabetes at Diabetic Aid

At some stage in your life, you have likely heard the word “glucose” and wondered exactly what it was. Glucose is a form of carbohydrate, and carbohydrates give you energy. People who have tasted glucose say it is sweet, like sugar. Let us say it is a simple sugar.
Where does glucose come from? Glucose does not exist in our bodies; rather our bodies produce it for us. When your body runs short of glucose, you lose energy. To revive the energy, your body must consume carbohydrates from the outside and turn them into glucose which is then absorbed by the body and and—voil?!—you get renewed energy.
The natural form of glucose that I am referring to is actually called by its common industry name, “dextrose.” Commercial glucose is produced from starch. This starch is extracted from crops that are grown for this purpose. The process by which it is extracted from this starch of the crops is called enzymatic hydrolysis. The crops used for this purpose generally are potato, arrowroot, cassava, maize, wheat and rice. The United States is a consumer of corn starch, which is extracted from maize.
The process of enzymatic hydrolysis exclusively involves heating the starch to high temperatures for the enzymes to become deactivated. This is then completely hydrolyzed using glucoamylase. After some more processes, the solution is purified by carrying out filtration and solidified by repeated crystallizations. The process as described above should give you a bare idea as to how glucose is being produced commercially.

When teaching your patient how to inject insulin, give her the following instructions:
Assemble all equipment. Then wash your hands with warm water and soap.
If you”re using intermediate-acting or long-acting insulin, gently roll the bottle between your hands. Never shake the bottle. If you”re using regular insulin, skip this step.
Clean the top of the bottle with alcohol. let it dry so that you don”t inadvertently introduce alcohol into the insulin.
Inject an amount of air into the bottle equal to the amount of insulin to be drawn up.
If you”re mixing more than one type of insulin, draw up the regular insulin first. Be sure to draw up the proper amount of insulin. If you see air bubbles in the syringe, gently tap it with your finger and push lightly on the plunger.
Clean the injection site with alcohol or warm water. If you use alcohol, let it dry before injecting the insulin.
Spread the skin at the injection site. Smoothly inject the needle at a 90-degree angle.
Withdraw the needle and immediately apply pressure to the injection site with a cotton ball or alcohol swab. Don”t massage the area.
Discard the needle in a puncture-resistant container, such as a coffee can.
Sodium
The American Diabetes Association recommendations for sodium, less than 3,000 mg per day, are no more restrictive than is common for the general population. Patients with diabetes who also have hypertension should ingest no more than 2,400 mg of sodium per day.
Common Caloric Sweeteners
Sweeteners are classified as caloric or noncaloric. Sucrose, fructose, and alcohol sugars are the most common caloric sweeteners. Caloric sweet- eners are no longer banned from the diets of patients with diabetes. But if your patient consumes sucrose or fructose, she must exchange it for another carbohydrate. Just like other sources of carbohydrate, sucrose and fructose provide 4 calories per gram. However, your patient shouldn”t consume more than 5% of her daily carbohydrate calories in the form of caloric sweeteners.
Sugars in alcohol-sorbitol, xylitol, and mannitol-have little effect on blood glucose levels. Your patient shouldn”t include them when calculating the carbohydrate content of foods. She also shouldn”t use them to treat hypoglycemia.
Patients with diabetes may eat all the noncaloric sweeteners currently approved for use in the United States- aspartame, acesulfame K, and saccharin. They contain virtually no calories and have a negligible effect on blood glucose.

Diabetes is now becoming increasingly widespread across both adults and children. A lot of this is down to obesity and the vast amounts of sugar and refined white flour that is in our diet these days, but how do we know if we have diabetes and what are the signs of diabetes we need to look out for?
Well first of all lets get an understanding of what diabetes is. The first thing we need to understand is that there are two types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the pancreas doesn”t produce enough insulin, and type 2 when the body”s cells don”t respond well to insulin. Both result in high blood sugar levels because the body is unable to process the available glucose. At one time type 1 was known as juvenile diabetes as it was mainly found in younger people, and type 2 was expected to be found in older people, but this is not necessarily the case now.
At present it is not really known what causes type 1, but it occurs when the immune system attacks the insulin-producing part of pancreas. With this form of diabetes, the beta cells of the pancreas no longer make insulin because the bodys immune system has attacked and destroyed them, this leads to this form of diabetes being controlled mainly by insulin injections.
Type 2, which is probably now the most common type, is often caused by poor diet and obesity. Quite often you can control this type of diabetes with a combination of dietary treatment , tablets and injections and, frequently, insulin supplementation.
So now we know what the diabetes type are what are the signs of diabetes to look out for?
The signs can be very similar in both type 1 & 2 due to the drop in blood sugar levels. This could be down to a lack of insulin production, no production at all or simply, insulin resistance. The symptoms to watch out for are as follows
Extreme thirst
Frequent urination  especially at night
Tiredness
Unexplained weight loss
Blurred vision
If you spot these symptoms happening to you consistently, then you must see a doctor as soon as you can. Whilst diabetes is very treatable, it is also very severe if left untreated and can lead to blindness, amputation, heart disease, kidney failure, erectile dysfunction and other problems.

Diebetes Mellitus, or Diabetes as it is also known as, is present in more than 15 million Americans at the current time. Even more amazing is the fact that almost 40% of them don”t even know they have the disease.
Another 20+ million have Pre-Diabetes Mellitus because of high blood glucose levels mainly caused by obesity, lack of exercise, and an improper diet. While it”s only natural to think it won”t happen to you, the truth is, more than 185,000 people will die this year alone due to type ii diabetes symptoms.
How do you get Diabetes?
The foods we consume contain natural glucose, which is a simple sugar. It is glucose that gives our bodies the energy we need every day. As the glucose goes through our bloodstream, it needs to be kept regulated. This is accomplished by our pancreas which produces insulin.
The more glucose, or sugar, that is introduced into our body, the more insulin that is released to regulate the blood glucose level. The problem arises when our body fails to produce the insulin we need, or it doesn”t produce enough.
Effects of Diebetes Mellitus
By having too high of a level of blood sugar in our body does severe damage over time. It can cause blurred vision and blindness, kidney damage, hands and feet to be lost, and even death. You”ll need to do all you can to prevent and treat the disease.
Types of Diabetes Mellitus
Type 1 Diabetes is the form of diabetes that requires daily injections of insulin medicine. The pancreas produces no insulin at all to control the blood sugar level. Without the daily insulin shots of medicine, the person will not survive. Approximately 10% of diabetics have Type 1, or Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus.
Type 2 Diabetes is the most common form of the disease. Also known as Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus, this form occurs when the pancreas either can”t produce enough insulin, or it stops using it properly. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is present in 90% of all diabetics, and usually affects people over the age of 40 the most. Genetics also play a big role with type ii diabetes symptoms.
The key to getting the disease under control is to prevent and treat it as soon as possible. Have a blood sugar test annually to check for symptoms. Don”t let Diebetes Mellitus get you by surprise.
